Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed his support for wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Thursday, stating that if the Congress had sufficient numbers in the state, they would have nominated her to the Rajya Sabha.
Phogat, who announced her retirement from international wrestling on Thursday, shared that she no longer has the strength to continue the sport. The 29-year-old wrestler apologized to her supporters on social media, explaining her decision to retire. Her announcement came after she was disqualified from the Olympic Games for being 100 grams overweight in the 50 kg category, which dashed her hopes of winning a gold medal.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Bhupinder Singh Hooda praised Phogat’s achievements and suggested that she should be sent to the Rajya Sabha. Dipendra Hooda, also speaking on the matter, emphasized that Phogat’s disqualification does not diminish her accomplishments. He said, “She has not lost, she has won. She has won the hearts of people and is an inspiration to the youth.”
