Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Monday that Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh should have resigned much earlier. She stated that his resignation was long overdue as violence had been going on in the state for more than two years.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore accused the BJP of removing Biren Singh in a “rush” just before the opposition parties moved a no-confidence motion. He blamed the BJP and RSS for spreading hatred in Manipur and claimed that the government took action after 22 months only to avoid facing the motion.

Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Sunday. His resignation came nearly two years after violent clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The conflict started after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also criticized the BJP, saying Biren Singh resigned due to public pressure, the Supreme Court, and the Congress. He accused Biren Singh of dividing Manipur and blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for letting him stay in power despite ongoing violence.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, “For almost two years, BJP Chief Minister Biren Singh fomented division in Manipur. Despite violence, loss of life, and destruction of the idea of India in Manipur, Prime Minister Modi allowed him to remain in office.”

The violence in Manipur has been a major issue since 2023, with clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities leading to deaths and destruction. Opposition leaders continue to blame the BJP for failing to control the situation.
