A tragic incident occurred in Gujarat’s Surat city where a 14-year-old eighth-grade student allegedly died by suicide. The incident took place on Monday evening in the Godadara area when the girl’s parents were not at home. The girl reportedly hanged herself.

According to Inspector of Godadara police station, the student had stopped attending school after the Uttarayan festival on January 14. Her parents had not paid her school fees for the past year, until March 2025. This financial issue reportedly escalated into a heartbreaking situation.

The girl’s father, Raju Khatik, claimed that the school had taken strict actions against his daughter due to unpaid fees. He alleged that the school did not allow her to sit for exams and publicly humiliated her by making her stand outside the classroom. These incidents deeply affected the young girl, he stated.

This tragic event has sparked an investigation by both the police and the district education department. Authorities are looking into the school’s role in the matter, including claims of humiliation and its policy on unpaid fees.

The girl’s death has also raised concerns about the mental well-being of students and the impact of financial pressures on their education. Parents and local activists are questioning the school’s strict policies and their enforcement. They are demanding accountability and urging institutions to adopt more empathetic approaches.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police have assured that all aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined. This incident highlights the urgent need for schools, parents, and authorities to address such situations with sensitivity and understanding to prevent such tragedies in the future.
