Five Policemen Found Guilty in Custodial Death Case

A magisterial inquiry has held five police personnel responsible for the custodial death of Akshay Shinde, an accused in the Badlapur school sexual abuse case. The inquiry report was submitted in a sealed cover to the Bombay High Court today.

Shinde’s father, Anna Shinde, had filed a petition in the High Court, alleging that his son was killed in a fake encounter. The officers named in the report include Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Shinde from the Thane Crime Branch, Assistant Police Inspector (API) Nilesh More, Constables Abhijit More and Harish Tawde, and a police driver.

Court Directs FIR Against Officers

A division bench comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Neela Gokhale reviewed the report and directed the government to register an FIR against the five officers. The bench stated, “The magistrate has concluded in his report that these officers are responsible for the death of Akshay Shinde. As per the law, an investigation must follow.”

The court also sought clarification from the government about which agency would handle the case. It emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in investigating the custodial death.

Family Demands Justice

Anna Shinde, the petitioner, continues to demand justice for his son, asserting that Akshay was a victim of police excesses. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the misuse of power by law enforcement officers.

With the High Court’s intervention, the focus now shifts to ensuring a fair and thorough investigation into the actions of the accused officers. The development is a significant step towards addressing custodial violence and upholding the rule of law.
