The Supreme Court today emphasized that secularism means “live and let live.” This remark came during the hearing of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision, which declared the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board Act, 2004 unconstitutional.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra heard arguments from both sides before reserving its judgment. The court stated that the issue must be viewed from a broader perspective, considering India’s diversity, which includes Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, and others.
The Supreme Court stressed that India is a fusion of various cultures, civilizations, and religions, and any decision on the matter should reflect this unity in diversity. The bench’s decision is awaited as it could have significant implications for the relationship between religion and education in the country.
