Two more junior doctors joined the hunger strike today in West Bengal, supporting their colleagues who have been fasting for seven days, demanding justice for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital, along with other hospital-related issues. Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan and Alolika Ghorui from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital added their voices to the protest, raising the number of fasting doctors across the state to 10, including participants from North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri.
Additionally, hundreds of protesters marched to the CBI office in the CGO complex, seeking justice for the slain doctor. Private hospital doctors have also announced that they will halt work partially for 48 hours, starting October 14, as a show of support.
In response to the collective resignations submitted by many doctors in government hospitals, the West Bengal government stated that such resignations must be given individually, as per service rules. This statement came after several doctors submitted a signed letter demanding justice. In solidarity, 38 doctors from Arambagh Medical College and Hospital have also decided to resign collectively.
The protests have escalated, with both public and private hospital doctors seeking justice and reforms in the state’s healthcare system.
