Harini Amarasuriya, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) party, has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. The 54-year-old rights activist and university lecturer took the oath before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Amarasuriya will oversee key departments including Justice, Education, Labour, Industries, Science and Technology, Health, and Investment. She becomes the third woman in Sri Lanka’s history to hold the position of Prime Minister.
The election followed the resignation of former Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, who stepped down after two presidential elections were held in the country. Amarasuriya’s appointment signals a shift in the nation’s political landscape.
In addition to Amarasuriya’s swearing-in, NPP Members of Parliament Vijitha Herath and Laxman Nipunarchi also took oaths as Cabinet Ministers, solidifying the NPP’s influence in the government. The country now looks ahead as this new leadership takes charge of guiding Sri Lanka through economic and social challenges.
