The Delhi High Court today indicted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders in a defamation case concerning allegations of voter suppression. The case revolves around comments made by the AAP leaders, claiming that 30 lakh voters from certain communities were removed from the electoral roll in the national capital.
The court found the allegations to be prima facie “malicious,” with the intention of defaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and securing undue political advantage. This indictment comes as a significant setback for AAP, with the court expressing serious concerns about the motivations behind these allegations.
The High Court also refused to cancel the actions against Education Minister Atishi and Manoj Kumar, indicating that they will remain part of the ongoing legal proceedings. All concerned parties have been directed to appear before the lower court on October 3, 2024, where the case will continue.
The defamation case was initially stayed by the High Court on February 28, 2020, but today’s ruling has reignited the legal battle, putting pressure on the AAP leadership as they prepare to defend themselves in court.
