The Election Commission announced today that elections for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in nine states will be held on September 3. These seats became vacant after current Rajya Sabha members, including Central Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, were elected to the Lok Sabha and subsequently resigned. Additionally, by-elections will be held for two seats in Telangana and Odisha.
In Telangana, K. Keshav Rao resigned from the Rajya Sabha after leaving Bharat Rashtra Samithi to join the Congress. In Odisha, Biju Janata Dal MP Mamata Mohanta resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat and primary membership of the party. The Election Commission’s announcement sets the stage for these crucial elections, which will fill the vacant seats and ensure representation for these states in the Rajya Sabha.
