The dangerous Chandipura virus has spread to four states, resulting in the deaths of 12 children. According to the Union Health Ministry, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune is on high alert. Experts warn that the virus has a fatality rate of 70% among children.
The virus can cause death within 24 to 48 hours, making early medical intervention crucial. Doctors emphasize the importance of hygiene, wearing full clothing, and protecting children from mosquitoes to prevent infection. Immediate hospitalization is advised if symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhea, or seizures appear, as the virus rapidly affects the brain, potentially leading to coma and death.
The Chandipura virus was first identified in 1965 in Chandipur, near Nagpur, Maharashtra, which is how it got its name. It re-emerged in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat in 2004, 2006, 2019, and 2007, respectively.
Currently, the virus is affecting children in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Blood samples have been sent to NIV Pune for analysis. In Gujarat alone, 8,600 people have been tested, with cases reported in Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, and Rajkot. The affected region is divided into 26 zones to contain the outbreak.
