The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shah Jahan Sheikh and six others in connection with the January 5 attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The chargesheet was submitted to a special court on Monday, according to officials.

The incident occurred when an ED team arrived at Sheikh’s residence to conduct a raid as part of their investigation into a multi-crore ration scam. Upon their arrival, the team was confronted by a mob, which led to a violent attack on the officers. The raid was part of a broader investigation into widespread corruption and embezzlement within the state’s public distribution system.

Sheikh, along with six others, has been charged with obstructing the duties of public servants, causing grievous harm, and inciting violence. The CBI’s chargesheet outlines the roles played by each accused in orchestrating and participating in the attack.

The incident has sparked significant political controversy in West Bengal, with the TMC accusing central agencies of targeting their members for political reasons. However, central authorities have maintained that their actions are driven solely by the need to uphold law and order and address corruption.

The special court is expected to review the chargesheet and decide on the next steps in the judicial process. This case underscores the ongoing tensions between state and central authorities over the handling of corruption cases in West Bengal.
