The Congress party has refuted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertions and challenged him to substantiate his claims, accusing him of spreading falsehoods to divert attention from pertinent electoral issues. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of becoming synonymous with deceit, branding him as a symbol of ‘Astyamev Jayate.’
Ramesh rebutted Modi’s allegations regarding the Congress’s stance on inheritance tax, citing historical instances such as Indira Gandhi’s donation of ancestral property to the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in 1970. He also referred to a budget speech by VP Singh during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure, which proposed the abolition of inheritance tax, as evidence.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress office ahead of the second phase of elections, Ramesh emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing crucial issues like unemployment and inflation, dismissing BJP’s attempts to shift the narrative. He asserted that the Congress would not engage in political games orchestrated by the BJP, opting instead to focus on substantive issues affecting the electorate.
Ramesh criticized the Modi government’s failure to conduct the census in 2021, alleging ulterior motives aimed at undermining reservation policies. He dismissed the Covid-19 pandemic as a pretext, highlighting the absence of a similar justification for the ousting of the elected government in Madhya Pradesh.
