In the aftermath of 21-year-old farmer Shubhkaran Singh’s tragic demise on the Punjab-Haryana border, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken a significant step by mandating a judicial inquiry into the incident. Acknowledging the sensitivity of the matter, the High Court has explicitly stated that the investigation cannot be entrusted to either Punjab or Haryana authorities.
A division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerjee, has swiftly responded by establishing a three-member committee. This committee, tasked with ensuring a fair and unbiased probe, will consist of retired high court judges and two ADGP-rank officers from both Haryana and Punjab.
The court has set a deadline for the states to submit the committee members’ names by 4 pm today, emphasizing the urgency and gravity of the situation. This development underscores the commitment to transparent and impartial investigations, aiming to provide justice and clarity in the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Shubhkaran Singh’s untimely death.
