In a recent address at IIM, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of acknowledging China’s attempts to influence India’s neighboring countries while reassuring the public that India need not fear this “politics of competition.” Jaishankar acknowledged the inherent challenges in the neighborhood but underscored the necessity for mutual cooperation, stating, “neighbors need each other.”
Responding to a query about the strained relations with the Maldives, Jaishankar acknowledged the competitive dynamics arising from China’s expanding influence in the region. However, he asserted that such competition doesn’t equate to a failure of Indian diplomacy, urging acceptance of China as a neighboring country engaged in competitive politics.
Jaishankar encouraged a positive perspective, stating, “We should welcome competition, and we also have the ability to compete.” He addressed concerns about China utilizing its economic prowess, asserting that India should focus on its strengths and not merely complain about China’s strategies.
Highlighting India’s contributions to neighboring countries, Jaishankar cited the example of assisting Sri Lanka during a severe economic crisis. He urged the audience to trust Indian diplomacy amidst the ongoing ‘India Out’ campaign in the Maldives, emphasizing that India’s current capabilities, interests, and reputation dictate its involvement in challenging situations.
The Foreign Minister concluded by addressing the deployment of the Indian Navy in the Red Sea, attributing it to the increased attacks on merchant ships. The speech underscored the need for strategic positioning to safeguard India’s interests and maintain a proactive role in the region.
In essence, Jaishankar’s address conveyed a message of confidence, advocating for a nuanced understanding of China’s influence while asserting India’s capability to navigate the complexities of international politics.
