A 24-year-old man from Malappuram district, Kerala, has died due to Nipah virus infection, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. In a statement today, George revealed that the Nipah infection was confirmed after an investigation into the cause of death by the Regional Medical Officer.
The minister explained in a video message, “The samples were immediately sent for testing, and the results confirmed Nipah infection.” The young man, who had recently arrived in Kerala from Bengaluru, passed away on September 9. Following his death, samples were sent to the Kozhikode Medical College and Hospital for further testing.
The state health department has increased surveillance in the affected areas, and officials are closely monitoring those who may have come into contact with the deceased. This is not the first instance of Nipah virus in Kerala, where previous outbreaks have prompted the government to remain on high alert for potential cases. Nipah virus, a zoonotic infection, can cause severe respiratory issues and encephalitis in humans, often leading to fatal outcomes.
