A Delhi court has convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a murder case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Special judge Kaveri Baweja announced the verdict and scheduled the hearing on the sentence for February 18. Kumar was brought to the court from Tihar Jail for the ruling.

The case involves the killing of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati Vihar, Delhi, on November 1, 1984, during the riots. The case was initially registered at Punjabi Bagh police station but was later handed over to a special investigation team (SIT) for further probe.

After reviewing the evidence and hearing final arguments, the court reserved its verdict before announcing the conviction. Sajjan Kumar had been facing trial in this case for several years. The court had framed charges against him on December 16, 2021.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots erupted after the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading to widespread violence and the killing of thousands of Sikhs. Many political leaders were accused of involvement in the riots, and legal battles over the incidents have continued for decades.

The sentencing of Sajjan Kumar on February 18 will be closely watched.
